Evelyn A. Scott Foundation (hereinafter ‘EAS’) was founded by Zacora Atyire’ Scott, (hereinafter ‘ZAS’) in June 2024. The passion was given to ZAS as a second generation at an early age. ZAS’ aspiration of developing and naming her foundation was inspired by her grandmother, the late Evelyn Ann Scott aka “Budd” to ZAS, who passed away in October 2016. Budd had a heart for giving to all. She had a “special” love for the elderly and youths. No matter who you were, where you lived, what you did, or your circumstances, if you called upon her, she was there for you. Shared are a few of the many blessings Budd gave: In January 2014, we attended one of our cousins’ funerals and it was chilly and cold; between 40-50 degrees here in South Carolina. Budd had a coat she had never worn before until the day of the funeral. My cousin, Ann said… “ Evelyn, I love that coat; you need to give that to me… Budd said… Ok, Ann, that’s no problem… here you go!” In 50 below-degree weather, Budd took the coat off her back and gave it to cousin Ann. To date, Cousin Ann shares the story behind the “I’ll Give You the Coat Off My Back.”
Many families in the community couldn’t afford driving school nor was it offered through school programs at one point for many years. Well, you guessed it, Budd was the “community driving instructor”. She even taught an eighty (80) year old to drive and get her license. The only method of pay she accepted was … each person was to be ready and willing to drive when she came to pick them up. It is my understanding that all whom she assisted received their license on their first try because of Budd’s passion, instructions, time, care, and love she devoted to each of them.
She started a bicycle group called “Ladies Riding on Pink Wheels” for the community to help encourage, promote, and energize their health. Her giving branched out more, and she began donating items (food, clothing, and blankets) to one of the local homeless shelters, One80 Place.
Budd’s passion wasn’t just with the community, family, or her friends, it was given to me directly. At 5 years old, every Christmas Budd and my mom would buy a gift card and have me randomly walk up to someone and bless them with a gift card. She would also say, “Zacora, we’re going to be a blessing to many families whether we know them or not.” To date, my mom still provides me with gift cards during the holiday season. Then, we’d go to the local Chick-fil-A in Moncks Corner monthly and contribute $50-$100 through the drive-thru to cover meals. She loved volunteering her time with the elderly and youths just to see a smile on their faces. Then, she’d welcome many of the kids to spend the weekend with her. Budd’s passion for others was beyond the horizon, she lived by her favorite scripture: Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shephard, and I shall Not Want…
As a young kid with frequent hospitalizations, I did not want to be hooked up to tubes and wear “ugly” gowns. Budd’s love, charm, and care helped me on those challenging days. For every night’s stay at the hospital, she would buy me an outfit after I was discharged. She’d say… Zacora, those gowns look nice on you but Budd’s going to buy you some ‘nicer looking ones’ when you get discharged. Once discharged, she would buy me new outfits from “Gymboree” every Thursday because that was her shopping day for me. From there, my passion grew stronger in the interest of modeling and fashion as she and my mom would have me pretend to “walk the runway” as I tried on my new outfits. Budd and my mom paved the way for me to know … “In every challenge, there is a purpose, but one must recognize it.” Being in the hospital for 2 months after being born (1lb 13oz @ 6 months ), my mom kept a diary. As I got older, she shared the diary with me, and I was in tears. She noted every ounce I drank, the stool I made, and the nurses who cared for me (am/pm). I felt the love, care, and security that she held for me from her womb.
My mom, the first generation of passion, love, and care, is the world’s greatest mom and by far the “MOM OF THE NATION!” She always put herself last to accommodate and support me, regardless of whether I was sick or well. She is always there.
To date, my mom is my hero and warrior. I have never heard her tell me she is tired of doing anything for me. If I thought about it, my mom would do it! I can recall starting school, K-4, my mom would walk me to class every day until I was in the 4th grade when the school put safety measures in place that did not allow parents in the building during certain times. I was never a minute late, not to mention, she would wait an hour and a half in the car rider line in the evenings, so I didn’t have to wait or feel like she wasn’t there on time. Looking back, I now realize how much her favorite quote means to her when she says…” The Sky Is Not the Limit, It’s Just A View!” There was no LIMIT she wouldn’t go for me.
As the years passed, Budd experienced some health challenges which resulted in her being disabled and required direct well-care. At 6 years old, I helped my mom take care of her. Seeing Budd go from taking care of herself and helping others to not being able to do anything for herself sparked and encouraged me to help others more.
Having the same desires, passion, and zeal as my grandmother and mom was a must-have for me. In January 2023, God gave me an assignment to serve/ feed the youth department at my church every Sunday for the entire year. I asked my mom if I may share my interest with her regarding an assignment God gave me… she said… “ Zacora, every Sunday for the entire year?”… I said yes, Mom! With an astonished look on her face, she replied… Ok, Zacora!” I said to Mom, “ I know I don’t have a job, but God will provide and make the provision for this assignment”… Let’s just “Trust” Him.” Well, you guessed it, God provided… every Sunday I feed over 70 youths and teens the entire year with the help of my mom and many sponsors who believed in my mission.
Fast forward to March 2024, God gave me another assignment to encourage the youths and teens to pursue their academic and educational goals throughout the summer. As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, many students are still struggling academically to stay and get back on track, so I began to purchase school supplies along with the help of sponsors who believed in my mission.
Here I am, the second generation inspired by Budd and continuing her legacy, it’s with great pleasure and honor to introduce to the world the Evelyn A. Scott Foundation.
Hey Budd,
